If you're connecting your Trulli Bass50 to a Soundboks 4 speaker for a DJ setup, you're probably aiming for big, clean bass in a portable rig. But if something sounds off, like distortion, low volume, or weak bass, your cable setup or signal path might be the issue. Here's how to get things dialed in.
Symptoms of incorrect setup
If the connection isn't quite right, you might notice:
- Low bass output from the Bass50
- Muffled or weak sound
- Distortion or clipping when turning up the volume or adjusting levels
These problems are usually caused by connecting the Bass50 in the wrong direction or choosing the wrong port on your Soundboks.
Step-by-step troubleshooting
1. Start with the correct signal flow
Always connect from the Soundboks into the Bass50. This ensures the Bass50 receives a strong signal and adds bass to the overall mix the way it's meant to.
Do not connect from the Bass50 into the Soundboks. This will cause poor audio output from the Soundboks and impact overall performance.
2. Choose the right ports
The back of the Soundboks has several connection options, but not all of them are meant for output.
The two XLR combo ports on the Soundboks are both inputs only, Channel 1 and Channel 2, not outputs or a mix of input/output. These are designed for microphones or instruments and should not be used to connect to your Bass50.
Instead, use the 3.5 mm AUX OUT port on the Soundboks. This is the correct output and will deliver a clean signal to the AUX IN on your Bass50. A standard 3.5 mm aux cable is all you need for best results.
3. If you set it up backwards
No worries. Here's how to fix it:
- Unplug the cables
- Connect the Soundboks AUX OUT to the AUX IN on the Bass50
- Double-check your volume and gain levels to make sure everything sounds balanced and clean
Additional note on inputs
Our early testing found that the AUX IN on the Soundboks may not handle higher voltage signals as cleanly as its Channel 1 and 2 combo inputs (XLR/1/4"). If you're sending signal into the Soundboks through the AUX port, this could be causing distortion or clipping. This is not related to Bass50 performance, but it's something to keep in mind if you’re trying to route signal back into the Soundboks.
Our engineering team is currently reviewing this in more detail.
Quick recap
- Use the 3.5 mm AUX out on the Soundboks and connect it to the AUX in on the Bass50
- Do not try to send signal from the Bass50 into the Soundboks
- Avoid using the Soundboks XLR input when trying to output signal
- Reversed signal flow or incorrect ports will result in poor sound quality
Still having issues?
If your cables are connected in the correct order and you're still experiencing issues, the problem is most likely within the controller apps for either the Trulli Bass50 or the Soundboks. Double-check app settings and firmware updates before continuing.
